About me

I am a software engineer with more than fifteen years of experience building systems. Most of that work has been backend and infrastructure. It has been for banking and telecom clients, for research, and for a nonprofit organisation.

I have written software in a lot of languages over the years. Visual Basic and Classic ASP to begin with, then C#, .NET and C++. More recently Python, R, SQL, Dart and TypeScript. The tools change more often than the problems do.

So I have learnt to put my effort into the design rather than the tools. I like to plan. I want to understand the problem, settle on a structure, and write it down before any code gets written. On the systems I have worked on longest, that written plan is what made them possible to change years later.

I am a PhD candidate (ABD) in Computer Science at Washington State University. My research is on making very large spatiotemporal datasets tractable.
